Why Support Artist, Makers and Small Creative Businesses?

Posted by Alison Lush on

With everything that has been going on in 2020 with the pandemic, my thoughts have been about how I can make my own difference to the world.  I can't change it on my own, but I can make my decisions about where I spend my money and where it comes from.

Don't get me wrong, I have always loved a bargain and have myself imported jewellery goods from Thailand when I was running a stall at Spitalfeilds Market in East London.  So I was part of that issue of importing cheaper goods from overseas.

Firstly, two years ago, I decided that I was no longer going to buy in goods and this coincided with leaving the London market.  I no longer wanted to have imported jewellery alongside my own when I didn't know how it was made and how the employees were being treated.  I did try to buy from reputable companies, but deep down you can never be totally sure if the company was a good one.

Secondly, since the pandemic, I now feel that I want to support individual artists and makers, I want to know who they are and what gives them their passion.  There are so many amazing artists, ceramicists, potters, jewellers out there and it is important to me to help support these beautiful, passionate people.  Also, having a home full of most amazing, beautiful pieces that will bring me much joy.  It's a win win.

I want to see their studio, where they work, how they live their lives, why they do what they do.  I want to feel a connection with them and their art.

I also believe that when you buy a piece of art from it's maker, it is for keeps.  It is something the you will love and cherish for years to come.

I want to do my bit for the environment with not having pieces of stuff flown around the world or transported by large container ships.  I want to support my local and British Artists.  We have so many talented, fabulous people.

So out goes cheap, imported, heavily packaged, uninspiring things, and in comes beauty, individuality, extraordinary authentic things that will just fill me and my home with all the things that I love in the world.

I hope you will agree

Alison
